Throughout my time using Lemmy, I have learned about the populations of a bunch of different instances and have made accounts on several different ones based on what I find. However, I’m about to make a Matrix account and this is a whole new ball game. Which server should I choose/avoid making my account on? Does it really matter as much as it does on Lemmy?
I just use the main matrix server and it’s been fine. I wouldn’t worry about it too hard bc I haven’t found anything yet that I can’t get to with that account.
This is the exact problem with the Fediverse. The first thing you need to do is make a decision for which the consequences are unknown. It’s overwhelming and off-putting.
I set up my own because I don’t want to be dependent on someone else.
Normally matrix servers don’t block each other they let their users do it instead.
Irc still. No matrix so far.
Why’s that? Simplicity and low overhead? Or is it an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” situation?
Irc works fine, people I know are there, and matrix has always seemed too attention -seeky for my tastes.
Hm. Elaborate on that. I’m trying to learn more about the space.
I don’t know what to add, I haven’t used Matrix so I’m unfamiliar with it and might be misreading it. But it seems to have an aura of “look how cool and hip this is”. Irc is old and comfortable even though it has a bunch of annoying limitations.
So for Ubuntu, it’s popular enough to have communities on irc, discord, matrix, etc.
I wanted to be in a Linux community in 2006 and discovered irc, and even then it was retro.
As the years have gone by I’ve tried the other sites, but imo text only has a vibe that you only get through that limitation. I get that images are a popular feature, but I prefer irc.
Matrix lost me with how awful the key crap was and element is really unpleasant to use.
Just matrix.org, like some kind of pleb.
I only have an account so I could join in one room, and that’s the server that the room was on, so I decided to keep things simple.
I use my own. The group I GM for wanted off Discord for privacy reasons, so I spun up my own server.
I haven’t used a Matrix server since my short, but regrettable, stint as Lord President of Gallifrey.
