Original post

This action was taken under an unannounced rule that can label and censor criticism of anyone or anything with ā€œFUD.ā€

Youā€™ll find itā€™s only used to protect the rich and powerful, though.

Unable to simply delete the post, the moderators scrubbed comments from anyone who named and shamed CEO James Dolan, but allowed his supporters to remain uncensored.

James Dolan is a thin-skinned billionaire crybaby who runs Madison Square Garden like itā€™s his own little surveillance state. The fact that he's using facial recognition tech to ban peopleā€”not for crimes, not for safety concernsā€”but for criticizing him is some straight-up dictator energy.........This isnā€™t just petty. Itā€™s dangerous. Itā€™s the kind of fascist-lite garbage weā€™ve been warning about for years: once the powerful get their hands on surveillance tools, they will abuse them to silence dissent. Dolan just doesn't care who sees it. Heā€™s too arrogant, too insecure, and too rich to be held accountable.

The madison square garden ceo, james dolan, is the biggest thin-skinned pussy I have ever read about. Someone who band an individual due to a critical remark they made and put on a shirt? Pathetic lol.

Criticism of basically anyone rich or powerful was removed.

Criticism of Tucker Carlson was removed.

Yep, Carrotcypher is in the mod list.

      https://hub.fosstodon.org/team/

I presume the admins just donā€™t know about this. They also moderate over 50 subreddits, including the Mastodon one. They tend to be the controlling moderator, or the top moderator that is regularly active.

Doing my best to compile more content about itā€¦

It might be worth letting them know.

I am extremely convinced that bad actors have become pretty good at taking over subreddits, and I know there are companies that will sell services where they will do this sort of stuff (ā€œreputation managementā€) if you want the internet as a whole to have a better impression of your company, or overall control the narrative. I donā€™t really know anything at all about carrotcypher specifically, but it sounds a lot like this person might be doing something at least similar to that. So assembling something thatā€™s well-documented and organized enough that itā€™s hard to dismiss and then sharing it with any people who are giving carrotcypher a position of authority, sounds like a really good idea. I can help with it in any way if you want me to (although like I say I have no idea about this person specifically beyond suspicious things like this that people have brought up).

The fediverse is very vulnerable to this kind of stuff I think, just like Reddit is, because thereā€™s always such a shortage of people who are really willing to put in the time and effort it takes to do behind-the-scenes work like moderation. I think we should definitely be vigilant about calling it out if it seems like someone is doing stuff thatā€™s sketchy.

Now, or after a couple more posts? I have commented about this moderatorā€™s political attitudes elsewhere but I still have a bit of a backlog of posts to release info about.

I feel like maybe with a blog post or something. Or just a post with a detailed laundry list of all the least defensible decisions. I think just having particular political attitudes are (in most cases) fineā€¦ but the stuff like this that I have observed on Lemmy, and most of the stuff youā€™ve been talking about, thereā€™s simply no reasonable reason for. I feel like Reddit is sufficiently anonymous-because-of-bigness and sufficiently corrupted that they get sloppier with it over there.

I want to say it would be a good idea to reach out to carrotcypher and get their take on some of this stuff, too. Itā€™s proper due diligence even though something about it makes me not like the idea.

Keep it coming, Iā€™m glad to get this kind of info both about Dolan and meritless censorship on Reddit.

I think Reddit has strong anti witch hunt rules after the whole Boston bomber fiasco. Canā€™t fault them for going for ā€žblast it from the orbitā€ approach, they couldnā€™t even keep Reddit profitable without resorting to hosting porn and you want them to have nuance in moderation.

I meant they canā€™t differentiate between them because thereā€™s too many reports to go through probably. Reddit relies on volunteers because it canā€™t afford to employ enough people to moderate it for real.
