People are most likely taking your comment as a play of this idiom and it sounds like you are yelling at someone to be self reflective. It’s miscommunication
Honestly, I thought you were using it rudely as well. Like,“Look in the mirror, ya dipshit” Your explanation cleared it up, and then going back and rereading it, I see what you meant, but don’t get too bent about the person taking you the wrong way. I probably would have done the same at first.
