I saw on another thread from a month ago or so it’s because you can finance one comparatively cheap, like 100 quid less per month, than other similar cars which means people are still buying them. Sorry I can’t find the link but also yes I agree with your statement.
It’s also because vehicle tax changed at the start of April. Any registered before April 1st this year you’d pay £0 tax a year on them, any after there’s a yearly tax.
Not quite. Even existing EVs (with some exceptions for older vehicles) will be charged the new basic VED rate of £195 when they are next due to renew (which could be in up to a year’s time).
What EV purchasers were trying to avoid was the expensive vehicle supplementary tax of £425/year for cars with a list price of over £40k, which EVs purchased/registered since the start of April are no longer exempt from.
As the vast majority of new EVs on the market fall into that price bracket (including all Teslas except the base tier Model 3), suddenly the yearly tax for most new EV purchases jumps from £195 to £620/year.

So my little 2014 ecoboost Fiesta will now not be £0 either?
Assuming your Fiesta produces < 100g/km CO2, looks like you’ll now be paying £20/year (as it was manufactured before 2017, different rules apply) - could be worse!

Tesla’s after April will be taxed at about £600 a year, instead of £0 a year.

I honestly dislike him as much as you and it’s worrying that we’re increasingly turning into another US.
As others have mentioned though, the road tax rules (we pay very few tolls) have changed in the UK in April meaning it’s now a lot more expensive to buy EVs than it has been in the past.
I expect that if you looked at other manufacturers in the same time frame their sales would have increased a lot more than Tesla’s.

In fact, some British citizens abandoned relatively comfortable lives in the empire to fight for Irish independence. Eg, Countess Constance Marievicz. That said, there is still a way to go. That reasoning could explain Italy and Spain, but Norway is an early adopter of EVs. The early adopter really, they have far more EVs per capita than any other country.
Edit: but I do agree that without absolute numbers or relative market share numbers, we only know half the story. All ev sales could be massively up compared to last year, while Tesla’s only remained stable.
